Rite Aid 101: How to get the most out of shopping at Rite Aid

January
11th

If you are a new shopper at Rite Aid, I am glad that you came to this site!  Starting off shopping at Rite Aid can be quiet overwhelming, just understand the abbreviations can be difficult.  I am going to take you through this step by step, at the end you should be a Rite Aid PRO!

Rite Aid has a weekly ad just like every other store, there are some important things to remember when looking at their ad.

What are these?

1.) +UP rewards:

Rite Aid’s +UP rewards look like this, and they print off the end of your receipt after you have paid.  You can use these as cash off your next order.  They have to be used in one transaction, they will not give you change if your +UP reward it bigger than your order total.

You can find which items will give you +UP rewards from their weekly ad, you can see that this particular week Motrin PM has a +UP reward of $2.  You can use Manufacturer coupons and Store coupons with an item that has a +UP reward.  The weekly ad told us in this picture, that we would be getting a $1 manufacturer coupon in Sunday’s paper to make this FREE!  You can use +UP rewards to pay for other items right away.  I stand at the register and rip off my +UP rewards to pay for the next transaction, I will sometimes do this up to 10 times just to keep my out of pocket costs lower.

Unlike Walgreens Register Rewards, you may use +UP rewards to pay for the same item that you just received the +UP rewards from.  Consider the Motrin PM above: You could take the $2 +UP reward that you earned from the 1st bottle purchased, purchase another bottle and pay with the $2 +UP reward you just received.

Many times the ad will inform you of a limit, this would be an amount of items that you can purchase and receive the +UP reward back.  You can still purchase the items at the sale price, but will not be receiving the +UP rewards back after the limit is reached.

2.) Single Check Rebates (I refer to them as SCR)

You can also find these in your weekly ad, they will look like this.

You can also use manufaturer and store coupon on SCR deal to make the deal even better!  A SCR is a rebate that you will get back at the end of every month.  Everytime you purchase an item that has a Single Check Rebate with it, you will need to input the information to your receipt to qualify for the money back.  You can insert as many receipts with SCR items on them as you want throughout the month, but can only request ONE rebate check at the end of the month.  Follow these steps below if this is your first time putting receipts into the SCR system.

1.) Go to Riteaid.com
2.) Sign up for a Rite Aid Wellness Plus card. If you already have one get it out to do the next step.
3.) Create an account, or log into your account.

  • They will ask you for your Store card when you sign up for the first time.

4.) After you have signed up head back to Riteaid.com and look for this logo halfway down on your left.

You will click on this when you have an item that qualifies for a SCR.  You will sign into your Single Check Rebate account, or create a new one.

5.)You will need to enter your receipts in here, it will look like this.  You can find all the information at the top of your Rite Aid receipt.

Once you have entered in your receipts, you will get an email within 2-3 days letting you know that your account has been updated.  Log back into your account and you will see that you have received your rebate.

6.) At the end of the month, log back into your SCR account to request your check.

  • Checks usually take 1-2 weeks to get to you.  They can either be cashed at your local bank, or you can use them right at the checkout at Rite Aid like cash.  The only difference is that you cannot get change back if your total is less than the amount of the SCR check, so plan accordingly.

What are Video Values Coupons?

These are Rite Aid coupons that you get from watching short video clips from Rite Aid’s website, you can sign up for a Video Values account here. These are store coupon,s and may be using combined with Manufaturer coupons.

There are some things to remember about these coupons:

  1. You watch 1 video and receive a coupon for watching the video.
  2. You can use only one Video Value coupon per product, per month.  You cannot print out multiple copies of these coupons, they will not work and will say ‘previously used’ at the register.
  3. You can use them along with one Manufacturer coupon per item.
  4. You cannot use them with an in-ad Rite Aid coupon. (They both begin with numbers RT149, which means the computer views them as the same sort of coupon)
  5. These expire the month after you have watched them, and new videos come out every month.

Now you need to learn Rite Aid’s coupon policy. You can find a copy of that below. I would suggest printing it out and putting it with your coupons, you never know when you need to bring it out…

These are the things to get you started.  There are a few more things that I will address in a second post, but this will get you on your way to being a professional Rite Aid shopper!

I am doing my first “coupon” adventure to WalGreens this evening. We will see how I do?!?!?

I started “couponing” a couple weeks ago and your site helps sooo much! today i bought 92 dollars worth of stuff from Rite Aid and paid 27 out of pocket, have 16 in UP rewards left, and am getting two $10 bottles of Aveeno lotion for free! It is like they are paying us to take these items from the store! Thank you!

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with some pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is fantastic blog. A fantastic read. I’ll definitely be back.

I saw the commercials for Extreme Couponing, I had to surf around & see if I could find out to get started. I love that you just lay everything out so easily. I’m going to start my binder this weekend after payday, I can’t wait to show my hubby how much I can save us. Most couples have $ concerns & even fights about it, and he & I are no different in that respect. I hope this will helps dissolve those issues. I love that this is a job of my own in the family. Thank you

I’ve really been missing out on Rite Aid deals! On top of these savings, I also receive a discount on all of my Rite Aid purchases because of a family discount (my father is a Rite Aid district manager). I worked there when I was younger, but I didn’t do much shopping there because it seemed so expensive. I was wrong! I just wasn’t well informed about couponing. :)

  7. Debrataylor says:

Are there limits to how many you can get on the rewards ? If I buy 3 shampoos that are in this weeks ad for example.

  8. Jessica says:

Do Up Rewards expire? I’ve only used mine on the same day but this week I’ll have some extra Up Rewards to take home with me. How long do you generally have to use them? Thank you in advance!

Hi Lauren! First of all – let me say thank you for all of the amazing work you put in here!! It has been a huge help to me as I have undertaken the adventure of trying to save some $$ on food. I have 5 kids and am a stay-at-home mom. I worked for a while once they all were in school – but found that the money I made was not worth the stress of being behind on all of the household jobs – as well as the fact that the older the kids get (they are 9,11,13,14 and 16) they seem to get busier – which in turn makes me busier as well – dropping one off here, picking one up there, etc. Anyways, I decided to start couponing as a way to help re-alocate the funds because things are very tight – and I have been amazed at what can be saved!! Granted, because I am new at it, it takes me a lot of time….but I’m sure it will get better as I get used to it. Since finding your site – it has gotten so much easier…..so thank you!!!! I tell everyone about you and about this site :-) I also just started playing along with Rite-Aid and Walgreens – which is very cool!!! I do have one question…….. I understand the method – sale price, subtract coupons and any previous +UP rewards which equals the OOP expense. What confuses me is when you take off the rewards that you just earned and say it’s free. You can’t actually take them off of the purchase right away, right? so you are saying it’s like getting them free? or am I missing something? Again, thank you!!!!!

Nicole, thanks for the question, I try to put Free after +UP..that way you know that you do have to pay for it upfront, but then receive the +UP back. Hope that helps.
