May 27th, 2010

I am so happy that you have come to I am THAT Lady!  There are so many frugal blogs out there these days, and I am so excited you have found mine!  Let me introduce myself; my name is Lauren and I am 32 years young.  I have been married to my husband for 10 years and we have 3 beautiful children together; ages 7,3 and  1 and another baby on the way!  First and foremost, I am a Christian woman who is striving to do the best with the money that God has entrusted to me, my husband and I love to help others learn how to be wise with their finances through budgeting, coupons, and money saving tips.

In 2007 Mark and I were very comfortable with money, he is an actuary and has always made a great living for us, and I was driving a Pink Cadillac with Mary Kay Cosmetics.  I had earned my Cadillac within a year of starting Mary Kay and I was making a pretty good living, the only problem was that we were in a LOT of credit card debt and I wanted to be a stay at home mommy to our son (then 18 months old). We felt it best that I quit my job with Mary Kay so I could stay at home, only to realize that financially, we could not afford it.  We were running a deficit every month; it was hard to pay the bills and buy diapers and groceries. We had purchased our home as a 2 income family, and now we only had 1 income.  I remember sitting on our bed one night looking at our bills and crying.  It was such a dark and desperate time for me, I wanted to help out financially but we were just in too much of a hole, I saw no hope….

We decided I had to go to work full time at night as a server at a local Steakhouse, I went to work every night and wasn’t able to put my son to bed at night.  I was so sad having to miss out on that every night, I forgot what he ate for dinner and what his favorite bed time story was.  We prayed about it and took a look at our budget again, we figured that if we could cut back our grocery/eating out spending to $200 per month, I could stay at home.  We had never budgeted before, we bought what we wanted and if we couldn’t afford it we would put it on our credit card.  We figured we had been spending on average $1,000 per month on eating out and groceries for our family of 3, so cutting that down to $200 was a SHOCK to me, but I love a challenge!

I had never used a coupon before, but I had heard about them :).  I googled how to use coupons that night and was so impressed to find websites that teach you how to do it.  I stayed up late that night trying to figure out how to make it all work.  Two months later, I was able to quit my full time job and stay at home with my son!  A few months into my couponing, I had many friends that wanted to know how to do it.  I taught my 1st coupon seminar in my living room to 6 people, these seminars have grown into news appearances and large 100+ people seminars.  I am truly blessed to be used to help free others from financial strain.

‘I am THAT lady’ came along in June of 2010 after years of teaching coupon seminars I just couldn’t keep up with the demand, so I decided to start ‘I am THAT lady’ so I could reach a broader audience.  The name of the website was born out of the idea of being THAT crazy coupon lady – you know, the one you get stuck behind in the grocery line.  I still am that person and you can see that through my weekly shopping trips.  I also bring some of my teaching into ‘I am THAT lady’ through my Coupons 101 Video Series, this should help you get started off on the right foot!

This website is me :)  I can be a bit goofy and forgetful…..I have 3 children, a house to clean, a family to feed, friends to hang out with, a church to be volunteering at, coupons to cut and organize, shopping to be done,  and am running this website.  So I apologize for the typos (because you will find them) and I want you to have fun reading!  But I can guarantee that after following ‘I am THAT lady’ you will be a PRO at saving money, even if you do look a little crazy :)

Here at ‘I am THAT lady’, you can expect to find more than just coupons and deals.  I aim to teach you how to make couponing actually SAVE you money, and occasionally offer you some fabulous giveaways!  I like to teach tips on how to Decorate your Home for Less , how to keep you from spending too much money on Daily Deal Sites, and also Cook recipes with the FREE & Cheap items that you find with coupons.  I see time and time again that people start using coupons and start spending more and more money, this is where budgeting comes into play.

  1. Being located in Central New York,  you can find deals for local stores like Price Chopper, Tops, Wegmans, and Kinney Drugs.  These coupon matchups go up every Saturday so you can prepare your shopping trips the night before the sale starts on Sunday.
  2. If you are not local to me I write about National Stores as well; you can find weekly coupon matchups for Rite Aid, Walgreens, CVS, Target, Kmart, and Walmart.  The drug store deals are posted on Saturdays. The other store matchups are updated on Mondays.  Every store is updated throughout the week as well as deals pop up.
  3. You should start off by watching my Coupons 101 Video Series – this helps you get started, where to find coupons, how to match those coupons up with.
  4. You can also check out my FAQ page for frequently asked questions from other readers.

There is a lot of information on this website and in the world of couponing, but just take it one step at a time and in a few months you will be a professional teaching others!  I am just an email away so please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help you!

Due to the Increased time that it takes to run ‘I am THAT lady’ – I have partnered with some fabulous contributors that help out on a weekly basis:

  • Charla Roth – Rite Aid and Walgreens Deal Scenarios and Price Chopper matchups.
  • Rachael Stahl – Writes our Cooking with the FREE & Cheap Recipe Series and CNY Page
  • Andrea West – Tops Deal Specialist
  • Laura Zinck Covington – Rite Aid Matchups + in store deals.
  • And of course – my fabulous husband who watches our children, post reviews and Amazon deals.  And deals with my craziness :)

I just started with coupons about a month ago, and I can’t tell you how helpful it is to see how you and others stack coupons and share your match-ups so I can try the transactions myself. I really appreciate the time you take to outline your shopping trips– many thanks!!

Where do you get all of the coupons? Or rather do you have to have a coupon for each item, or can you use multiple ones in combination with store or other websites coupons, they still say manufacturer on them. I really admire you, I just have to learn from scratch & understand how many tranactions it takes or how many coupons you use, if it is deodorant, do you have a coupon for each one, if you have 40 or more. Our budget is very limited now since I lost my job . Any advice would be grately appreciated.

I don’t know if this totally answers your questions, but in general, most stores will allow you to use 1 manufacturer coupon in combination with the in-store sale. So if Oscar Mayer hot dogs are on sale for 2/$5 you can either buy just one pack for $2.50 and use 1 manf. coupon also. Or you could buy 2 packs for $5 and use 2 manuf. coupons (this is assuming your coupon is for something off of one package.) If there is some great deal on something and you also have a coupon for it and you want to buy 10 of them, then you will need 10 manufacturer coupons. I don’t really stockpile like that. It’s stressful to me!! LOL! But a good example is that this week my local insert had a coupon for $3 off Bic razors that my husband uses. Our Kinney has them on sale for $3.99. So I asked my neighbors and family for the coupon if they didn’t want it and I ended up buying 5 packs for .99 a piece. It was a great deal, but I had to hunt up 5 coupons in order to make the most of it.

I am really excited that I found this site and I can’t wait to get started, but I am definitely feeling overwhelmed. I don’t know what anything means, the abbreviations, I don’t know what matchups are…is there some sort of “couponing dictionary” somewhere? =)

I am excited to get started and ready to save $$$. like you me and my soon to be husband have decided that we would like me to be a stay at home mom but we do want to have money to afford a nice home and cars and be able to take our family on nice trips, and heaven forbid get them through college. :) so i am defiantly ready to get started and hopefully make it through. i do agree that it seems like a lot of effort but really is it worth it to get all of the above to happen i think so!!!

Can I ask where you’re located? Also, do you print coupons online? If so, what are your favorite zip codes to get them from? I live in Indiana & I like to think I do OK with obtaining coupons, but just so I can follow along with your posts, to better understand them, I think it would help me to know where you are in comparison. Thanks & keep up the wonderful work you do!

yeh, they all vary per region. I may not even get all the coupons that I
post on, but I know that others do. You can always buy them from ebay or a
clipping service if you really need them.

I really just want to be able to manage what money we have versus what my family really needs and how to get there without sacraficing what my kids love the most. Thank You

As of right now you are a god send. I relocated at the end of Jan and started my new job in Feb. Sadly I lost my job on Monday. I have been using coupons for a couple weeks now and trying to get the hang of it. Your videos are very helpful! The one question I have is where do you find the coupons for soda? I’ve never been able to find any.

Well, I am thoroughly feeling like I am drowning! I hope to be able to learn by doing the research, and all the tips from any that are willing to share their wisdom. Thanks!

I used to coupon years ago when my kids where little, but i am wanting to start it back up. I have noticed though that you don’t get as many coupons with the Sunday paper like back in the day, and their expiration dates don’t last as long as they did back then either, so sometimes the coupons i print off will expire before i can use them up. Does anyone have any suggestions? It may not be worth me doing this.

If you recently got a target catalog in the mail titled “Big Honkin’ Deals” They have Nexcare kids “strawberry shortcake” bandaids on sale for $.98 and in the same ad they have a target $1.00 off kids nexcare bandaids. And then, in the paper today there’s a manufacture’s for $.55 off ANY nexcare product. I haven’t tried it yet but I’m sure it will work.

    Hi Lauren,
Thank you so much for this website. I have it bookmarked and check it often throughout the day! My case-it binder (thank you so much for that recommendation by the way) is on order and my first coupons have been clipped and tucked away in their respective 9 card baseball sleeves. I have a stupid question! Do you use the front and back of the sleeves for different coupons? In other words, do you put two different coupons in the same pocket, back to back, to double the use? Just wondering if that is a normal way to organize or not. Thanks so much for all of your help!!!
