Lowe’s has come out with a  great new website called MyLowes.com.  I am all about saving time and keeping track of my purchases, and we shop at Lowes a lot!  With it you can manage purchases, rebates, design ideas and more!  My favorite part was the place where I can manager my paint colors online, instead of keeping all my old paint cans :)

Shopping for Furniture on a Budget

August
25th

Lauren and I haven’t bought furniture in a while, but we’ve needed to.  So we saved up some money, set a budget and looked at a few stores. We went to a few places and didn’t find anything that jumped out to us at the right price.  Now we always heard of some top-secret Raymour & Flanigan outlet store, but we’ve never gone before and didn’t know where it was… but we found it, at 8015 Oswego Rd in Liverpool, and we are thrilled that we went there.  There selection is huge, and their prices are great.  The buying experience there was very laid back… the first salesman we saw basically told us, “look around, what you see is what we have and feel free to mix and match anything.”  Ha also added that they will lower the already reduced sticker prices (usually about 40%-50% off of the regular store price) on everything.  Seriously, their prices for comparable quality stuff was WAY better than any of the stores we went to.

So, we ended up getting a very nice sofa, love seat and ottoman for $899 plus shipping… so in total it came to about $1,030 including tax and delivery, which was just $30 over our budget.  Not too bad when compared to an original store price of about $2,500.  On top of that, we sold our old couch on craigslist for $350.

Another cool thing about the place is that there isn’t any up-selling.  There are no extended warranties and no crazy fabric protection plans, so it was very easy.  Our salesman simply took 15% off the reduced sticker price, and that was that.  We tried to bargain a little more, and he might have come down another $20, but I felt he was very good to us and not pushy at all.

Ask around your city or google ‘furniture outlets’ in your local town, you never know what hidden gem you can find!  I am sure you can find one discount furniture store in your town.  Most of the furniture in this store was overstock pieces, slightly damaged, or display models. With 3 young children, it was going to look slightly used in a month anyways, so we didn’t care if the item was a display model. Most of the items that we saw were brand new and just overstock items.

What are some ways that you save money on furniture?

Decorating a Baby’s Room on a budget

March
8th

I have baby on the brain lately, because I am about to have my 3rd amazing child in less than 4 weeks!  We found out we were expecting another baby the day after we moved into our new house.  Thankfully we got a 4 bedroom house, but one of the bedrooms was unfinished.

I didn’t want to spend a fortune decorating her nursery, so here are some frugal tips that I have learned along the way when it comes to decorating a nursery.

  1. Paint the room a neutral color if you plan on using it for another purpose in the future.  My husband and I had planned for this bedroom to be my office, but when we found out we were expecting we realized it would have to be a nursery.  We plan on having our 2 girls share a bedroom when they are older, so it only made sense to paint it one time.  We chose a neutral color, that way when it becomes an office we don’t have to repaint.
  2. Use stick on wall decals instead of painting murals.  These are new to me, this is the first time I have used them in a room before..  Since we are planning on having our girls share a bedroom, these can easily be taken off the walls and put up in their new bedroom. Then I don’t have to paint the bedroom again
    1. I bought the I am a Child of God decal online from Love Letterings for $12!
    2. I bought the brown and pink polka dots from Amazon for $10 (I used gift cards I earned from Swagbucks, so they were FREE!)
  3. Buy certain items from Craigslist or consignment sales. I purchased this crib from Craigslist for only $100, it came unassembled and even missing a few screws.  My husband was able to find the missing screws at Lowe’s for only $3.  If purchasing baby equipment from Craigslist, I recommend doing your research and making sure the item that you are purchasing has not been recalled.  This crib was practically brand new, and for 1/3 of the price!
    1. There are 2 consignment sales coming up next week in Syracuse, NY.  The Moms of Multiples Sale and Sweet Little Repeats. I plan on being at both of them next week, searching for items for my new baby, as well as clothing for my other 2 children.
  4. When carpeting a small space, look at remnant carpeting sales. We went to a carpet store that specialized in Remnant carpet.  You can choose from their remnants, which sometimes are WAY cheaper than installing an in-stock carpet at their store.  We choose a higher quality grade of carpet that we would have normally chosen, because it was a cheaper price and there were no hidden fees.  You have to watch out for those large box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot, they will charge you for for small things like tack strips that can send you over your budget. We were going to have Lowe’s come and give us an estimate, but they wouldn’t even do that until we paid them $39 to come over and measure the room.
  5. Skip the changing table. Our nursery is very small,  we did not have room for a separate changing table, so I am hunting down a changing table pad that I can stick on top of her dresser.  I have found that I don’t use the changing table as much as I thought I would, so going without it has been an easy switch for me.  Changing tables can cost almost as much as the crib, so skipping this option is definitely a frugal idea.

What are your frugal ideas for decorating a baby nursery?  I would LOVE to hear them!!!

Moving on a budget- Part 3

August
7th

If you missed the first 2 parts of this series you can find Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

I just had to share with you what an easy transition this has been into our new house.  Talk about crazy though.  Friday we closed on our house.  Friday and Saturday my husband spent both days putting in our new kitchen floor.  Sunday we moved in with our kids.  Monday both our kids came down with the hand, foot, and mouth virus, making them both pretty miserable. Tuesday I find out we are pregnant with baby #3.  Tonight I sit on the floor of a hotel room in Niagra Falls, NY while my daughter is sleeping.  I came here tonight with her to go to a family reunion.  It has been a whirlwind of a week, but God is in the whirlwind for sure!

Here is my last post on Moving on a Budget. I saved this one for last because we truly did get “LUCKY” or what I say as “Blessed” by these finds.  Most of our ceiling fixtures needed to get replaced in our new house.  We weren’t in a hurry to do them and figured that we would wait around to get a great sale.  God didn’t make us wait too long.  My husband was going into Lowe’s to get some blinds for our sons room and he happen to walk by a table full of clearance lighting fixtures.  They were still pretty expensive, but he has learned to ask someone if they can give him a better price.  We always say “the worst they can say is no.”  When he asked the manager of the department what he could do for us, he gave us the DEAL of the century!  I have to tell you that there was no planning or anything in this purchase.  There was only the exact right timing, not planned by us, and a ton of God’s blessing on this purchase.  We spent a total of $50 on 4 lighting fixtures, the total retail on these fixtures was over $400!!. Here they are….

Originally price @ $200.00

-Sold to us for $25.00!! ( No you are not seeing that wrong, really $25!!!)

On on the left originally $140.00

-Sold to us for $10.00

One on the right originally $100.00

-Sold to us for $10.00

And, one similiar to this one for $5.00

I can’t tell you how to get these types of deals.  The only thing that I can tell you are these points:

  • Shopping at Walmart is not always the cheapest way.  Shop the clearance racks at “more expensive” stores to get the BEST deals.
  • Always ask a manager if they can go down on the clearance price, the worst they could say is “NO”.
  • Wait until you find the perfect item on sale before you make the purchase.  Patience is key to good deals.

I hope you have enjoyed seeing some of my great finds to decorate my new house.  I hope that you can see how shopping at the “more expensive” stores, can actually be less expensive than you thought!
