Decorating on a Budget – Part 2

(sorry for the poor lighting)

My favorite place to shop for curtains is Bed Bath and Beyond.  When I tell people this, I usually get the reaction of “they are so expensive!”  I love to tell them about all the great deals I usually get there.  They have THE best clearance section EVER!  When I was speaking with one of the managers, she told me that everything that is in the store for a year, they automatically move to clearance.  The longer it stays on the clearance rack, the more reduced it gets.  Items are then marked 33%, 50%, or even 75% off the clearance prices!  You can also use Bed Bath and Beyond coupons that you get in the mail, or from the newspaper fliers.  They have 20% off coupons or $5/$15 coupons, that come out a few times per month.  These do have expiration dates, but did you know that it doesn’t matter?  Bed Beth and BEyond will take their own expired coupons!  They also will take more than one coupon per transaction.  We used 6 of them to buy our curtain panels.  They automatically come off the MOST expensive items, usually stores take them off the cheapest items.

My husband and I were so excited to buy 3 nice curtain rods, 6 thick luxurious curtain panels, and 4 ties backs.  We spent $115 on all of this!  Even Walmart curtains are expensive now, running $30 per pair.  When shopping for our new house we decided to look at Bed Bath and Beyond for our curtains first.  We always try to plan our rooms around the curtains because we like thick, rich looking curtains and usually they can be VERY pricey.  JCPenney’s has curtains like this for $50 per panel!!!!  OUCH!

Decorating on a budget – Part 1

I found it only appropriate to write a few post on how to move on a budget, since I am in the middle of unpacking and settling into my new house.  We have a sum of money that we have been saving for the past 9 months, this was specifically for buying a house and decorating.  My husband is a very good decorator, he has great taste. I love his taste and so we decorate well together!  The kitchen floor in our new house was not our taste, see picture below….

We decided that we HAD to do the kitchen floor before we moved in. If you have little kids you know how impossible it is to have the kitchen out of commission for 2 days.

There are some great 10% off coupons from Lowe’s that you can find in the change of address packages in the Post Office.  We headed off to Lowe’s and found some great stick tiles that you can grout.  My husband is very handy, so this was a fun project for him.  At first we thought that these would be a temporary solution until we could afford a real tile floor.  After they were finished we realized that we LOVE these, and that they look just like real tile!  The whole project cost under $225 for a whole new floor!  Here is the finished project.

Stay tuned for more great deals we have gotten in the clearance section of many of our favorite stores!!
