fabric headboard{ditto} DIY: Inspired Design For the Rest of Us

Welcome to the July {ditto} DIY challenge!

Once a month ten very different bloggers are hosting this challenge to recreate in our own homes a project or design element inspired by a haute couture design. The idea is to inspire everyone to incorporate fine design elements into your own home in a way that fits your own style. (For more details on what {ditto}DIY is all about, check out this post.

The {ditto} DIY Challenge:

Frame some Fabric! Any fabric, any way….then use it in a lovely display.

Here is my Framed Fabric {ditto}DIY project:

I got a little bit carried away with this project, because it gave me an idea that ‘required’ me to do a complete re-design of my 4 and 2 year old daughters bedroom.  Did I mention I am 36 weeks pregnant?? Well, this past weekend my husband and I spent the entire weekend re-decorating and here is a sneak peak of the final re-design.  Over the next couple of weeks I will be posting about all the DIY projects that I did to make this room re-design happen for under $200.00 – including this super cute canopy I made.  Make sure that you sign up for my emails here to get these updates so you don’t miss them!

Here is the process for making this framed art:

I found these old window panels in my basement a couple of months ago – the house we currently live in is 100 yrs old and we have owned it for only 3 yrs  I was searching around the basement and came upon these beauties:

As soon as I heard that our July ditto DIY post was about framed art – I knew this is what I wanted to use for my frames.  I had to take out the old hooks and spray paint them white to start the project.

make your own fabric framed art

Here are the simple instructions:

  1. Take an old window frame and carefully remove the glass – my husband did this for me with a hammer and a chisel.
  2. Spray-paint the window frame.
  3. Select your fabric of choice – I actually found this fabric at my local Walmart – CRAZY!
  4. Lay your window frames upside down to measure out how much fabric to use.  Cut fabric out.
  5. Pull fabric out from underneath frame and then pull tight against the back of the frame.
  6. Use Staple Gun to staple to the back of the frame – make sure you are pulling this very tight as you staple.
  7. I used nails to screw these into the walls and just used some glitter buttons to cover up the nail holes.
