Comments:
Be careful using coupons at Tops, esp. the Clay store. Today I was told that I could only use one instead of two Apple Jacks $.50 coupons from Kellogg’s Web site because they had same barcode. I was buying two boxes. What?!? I tried arguing my case but cashier said when they hand type them in which they do with all the coupons at Tops, it rejects them because of the identical barcodes. I told her none of the other grocery stores have that rule and it’s in Tops’ coupon policy to allow 4 identical coupons on 4 same items. Contacting corporate about this and taking survey at bottom of receipt. This is ridiculous. So I made her take the cereal off. Told her I wasn’t paying over $2 for a box of cereal. I also told her the coupon Web sites allow you to print two.
I agree. The Clay Tops always gives me the most difficult time when it comes to coupons. I overheard them having the same argument with a customer in the next line over. When they gave me a difficult time I pointed out that yes, the bar code is the same. Manufacturer’s don’t make a different bar code for every coupon. It’s the same as manufacturers don’t make a different bar code for every jar of traditional Ragu. The bar code is only meant to indentify the product or coupon. Next time, point out that the veri-FI code is what they are supposed to look at and each veri-FI code will be unique to the coupon. This is the # under teh odd looking line/dot bar code. I hope this helps.
Thanks JenR. I’ll remember to point out the veri-Fi code the next time. I filled out the online survey at bottom of receipt, too. So maybe someone from corporate will contact me. It’s just ridiculous because Tops is the only one that reads the coupons first then hand types them in. Hand typing coupons is so archaic! Wegman’s and Price Chopper scans them first then if they beep, they read the coupon to see if there’s an issue. And, it’s not like I was extreme couponing either or getting the cereal for free.
I’m glad and helpd and boy do I know! One night I had a cashier read the fine print on every single coupon. I’m sure the customers behind me were not thrilled to say the least. The problem is, Tops has not updated their scanners and therefore the scanner can’t read the new style bar codes. They do scan the ones that incorporate both the old and new style barcodes but if the coupon only has the new style they have to manually enter it. I am now very careful to read the fine print on every coupon before I head to the Clay tops. They really make you feel criminal. I also shop at the Auburn Tops and they have never given me a problem.
I actually like that Tops hand types the coupons. If you are using a coupon that matches up with one of their click-to-card coupons, you will also get the click to card money off, even though you’re not supposed to. Hand-typing them doesn’t let the register know not to use the click-to-card one. I usually get double the money off that way!
I went to Tops and Target today and bought $86 worth of retail product and paid only $2.65. That’s a 97% savings. Feels great to win a few battles! Thank you all the hard work on the blogs to identify the deals!
That is amazing – anytime you have a shopping trip like that feel free to send me a picture with the details!
The coupon for 75 cents off 2 tony’s products says on it do not double so they would actually be 1.25 for 2
I have issues there as well. I was accused of copying a coupon because they had the same barcode. Funny part is the coupons had slightly different pictures. When I pointed it out to the cashier she was dumbfounded. She ended up accepting both coupons along with the rest that I had without a problem!
I have had trouble at Tops too – a cashier tried to tell me I couldn’t use the same coupon twice as well even though I was buying the right amount of stuff. She didn’t know what she was talking about, I knew that. I don’t usually bring their coupon policy with me but that is a good idea if you have a hard time. I just went home and emailed them about it. They apologized, told me they made sure the cashier would be informed of the correct procedure (that was my main concern) and gave me a $5 gift card. Also quite often when they type in a coupon it won’t automatically double, so keep an eye on them when they are typing them in! And, if a coupon says DND the cashiers who know what they are doing won’t let them double, the ones who don’t care will.
